From School Library Journal
Designed for use by public and school librarians and teachers, this book provides information for planning and implementing successful book clubs. Publicity, obtaining multiple copies of books, and discussion guidelines are outlined. This type of programming is described as a process where children gather to discuss a book, and participate in related games and crafts. The joy of reading is the bottom line. Each of the 16 chapters suggests a theme and a specific title, introduces the author and/or illustrator, and is followed by discussion questions, games, crafts, suggested snacks, and other titles to share. Developing the ability to read and discuss books at this early age should prove invaluable as students progress into higher grades. This is an excellent programming idea for school/public library collaboration. Access is provided through an author/title index and a subject index.

From Library Talk
This title describes what a book club is, why book clubs are significant in literacy development, and how to implement and support a book dub for children in your school. It explains everything an adult will need to know and need to do in order to start a kids' book club. Reproducible pages provide membership badges, letters to families, introductory activities, and guidelines for members. Fifteen chapters are dedicated each to a different popular children's book, fiction or non-fiction. Each chapter features biographical information about authors and illustrators, discussion questions, activities, games, crafts, and snacks that all follow the theme of the title. The titles spotlighted include The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch (Annick Press, 1988), Home Run: The Story of Babe Ruth by Robert Burleigh (Silver Whistle, 1998), and Digging Up Dinosaurs by Aliki (Crowell, 1988). Although the authors present stories and guidelines targeted to grades one through three, the skills and ideas are transferable to other age groups, with simple modifications of activities or use of age appropriate books. Name/title index. Subject index. Recommended. By Jodi Kearns.
